change the date part 2

if you were planning on watching Larva on the 15th at 8pm, please go ahead and tune into the Sci-Fi channel that night (or MSNBC, Bravo, Trio, or USA). Larva was moved to make room for a telethon to benefit the tsunami victims in East Asia; while you might not be able to donate much, any little bit helps. the telethon will air at 8pm regardless of your time zone.

submission

well, we’ve started submitting to film festivals. or, to be more precise, we’ve put together our submission materials so we can submit to festivals. it works like this: you can’t just send a video tape with your movie on it…you have to submit pictures, bios, script, video, anecdotes, press coverage…all kinds of things. and then, of course, you’ve got to include the entry fee. a quick search reveals 147 festivals that we can choose from: that’s just a partial sampling that does not include festivals who aren’t accepting submissions right now. the average entry fee is around $25#–so if we entered all of them that would be $3,675 in entry fees alone (doesn’t include postage, reproducing the materials, etc). so you can see how an indy producer has to be a little choosy on which festival he tries to enter#–but the anxiety occurs when you think "what if i enter the wrong ones!"

online gaming

i am a huge online gaming nut. and i’m here to say i have an addiction. i play WAY too much, and get carried away to the point of tracking my stats and joining a clan of other players online (kind of like a club, only geekier). right now my guilt pleasure is halo 2, a futuristic shoot-em-up#–only instead of saving the world, you run around shooting people and listening to ten-year-old’s say things to you like "how come you’re so bad at this?" my favorite part of the game is when i look at the clock and realize i’ve been playing for three hours and need sleep, only i have to play more because "i wouldn’t want to let the clan down."

so we’ve heard from all but two of the bands and the response is good#–we get to use the music! yay! and they like us, they really do! yay! now we just need to finish our sound mix and send off to festivals#–then begins the hand-wringing and the gnashing of teeth (also the hair-pulling and the biting of tongues…at which point we will decide which color envelope to use and actually do the submissions).

happy january 2nd

nope, i didn’t party till the sun came up on january first…instead, i played board games and ate popcorn. then i drove to st. louis to visit friends and party after the sun went down. helen fitzgeralds was dead, but we had fun anyhow. oh, and i saw meet the fockers, which i enjoyed immensely because i think DeNiro and Hoffman are brilliant. if you haven’t seen the graduate then you are missing how Hoffman rewrote the rules on the modern cinematic hero.

on a sadder note, Jerry Orbach passed away. while most will remember him as the stoic faced front-man of Law and Order, I will remember him as the satin-voiced pirate El Gallo of the Fantasticks. skip the movie remake and pick up the original cast CD. it’s worth it.
