Tribeca Family Festival

today i attended the Tribeca Family Festival in downtown NY. it was a little rainy, but still fun. i even rented a kid for an hour so i didn’t feel like such a loser for going alone. actually, i didn’t go all alone#–i went with my girlfriend Holland (she was performing though, so it didn’t really count).

the festival has grown since i worked on it back in 2002#–now it is just incredibly huge. i didn’t get a chance to see any of the films because i was a little too late getting into the city to really get the chance. but there’s always next year.

favorite cover

This is my favorite New Yorker cover ever…it was featured in the anniversary issue this year in a story about the evolution of New Yorker cover art. I’ve been saving the covers from the magazine for an art project waaaaay down the line… Posted by Hello

new projects

even when i’m not in front of the camera, i’m busy…or at least i try to be. i’m currently in the process of setting up a live event for MFAS, writing a monthly column for the MFAS newsletter, and auditioning every spare moment. combine that with the "Ozark Mile" rewrites and golf and i don’t really sleep.

but i do find the time to fit in nightly Three’s Company reruns.

i’m going to try to find space to post here the articles i will be writing for MFAS. more info on the event tomorrow or Saturday…

handicap

so i’ve been playing a lot of golf. why, you ask? because i’m waiting to hear back on some auditions and i’m stuck on a plot point in "Ozark Mile". i’m combining two characters, and while it seemed a like a good idea initially, now i’m struggling with the ramifications down the line (about page 65). anyone that’s read the script will flip when they see the changes i’ve made, and hopefully it falls in line with the original intent of the story. i’ve discovered that i’m a better rewriter than i am a writer. maybe that’s a good thing.

i’m heading to springfield again on Saturday to see Kyle Dean Massey in 42nd Street. hopefully Dan won’t blow me off this time so i can give him this New Yorker article i saved for him…

Golf handicap: 36. that’s a totally made up number that approximates my skill. i’m not that great. but then again, i didn’t take lessons (Michelle#–even Larey beat you).

The Moxie takes on eBay

my friends Dan and Nicole Chilton are opening an art-house and indie theater in Springfield, MO. a brave exercise, to be sure. he’s got a great business plan, a great location, great supporters, and lots of moxie#–so much so that he’s name the theatre the Moxie Cinema.

so Dan gets hit with an additional building requirement that added about $30,000 to his initial cost for opening. any normal person would blanch at the prospect and fold his cards#–but not Dan and Nicole. oh no. not them. they reworked the budget and brought the needed funds to a much smaller amount. and then started brain storming ways to raise additional capital. to raise the money, they pull one of the smoothest moves i’ve seen in a while.

eBay the Cinebar! what does this mean? it means the Moxie will eBay auction the rights to name their concession area. that’s right. if i have the highest bid, the Moxie will have the "Nicholas J. Coleman High-Five Rootin’ Tootin’ Food Bar". what will it be if you win?

don’t carry a bullwhip

so on my way back from a shoot in St. Louis, i missed an exit and ended up about thirty miles out of my way. being the intrepid explorer that i am, i thought "why not just take this highway east, and meet up with the road i should have been on?" not a bad thought, right? especially since i wasn’t on a schedule. well, the road i chose ended at a big military roadblock. apparently i had driven into an Army base.

the guard on duty told me i had two choices, drive back the way i came (at least an hour or more out of the way) or go through a background and security check and drive through the base. that’s right! i got to drive through the base! the guard ran my id, vehicle, plates, etc through the system, they searched me, then i had to pull my car into a search bay. they asked me if i was carrying any weapons (duh, no). and began their search. they systematically used these cool mirror thingies that looked like a giant dentist’s mirror (no lie) to examine the interior, exterior, and underside of the car. then i popped the trunk and the hood, and started dumbly joking with one of the guards. i was suddenly interrupted:
