Haggis, neeps, and tatties. Not your momma’s mashed potatoes.

I’m back from the UK! I took over 200 photos, so expect a gigantic swell of Flickr posts soon#–the processing should be complete by tomorrow night. It costs a lot to get everything on CD (I still shoot on film, not digitally) and I opted not to do it. I’ll be scanning them manually and that, my friends, takes time.

My favorite thing in Scotland was the surprisingly tasty local dish Haggis. I ate it several times, and each time it was served over neeps (mashed turnip) and tatties (mashed potatoes). It’s made by stuffing a sheeps stomache with the animal’s heart, lungs, and liver, and then adding oatmeal, onion, fat, and seasonings. I didn’t find this out until about thirty seconds ago when I googled the recipe.

I also ate black (blood) pudding… and a quick Google scan tells me that’s made of pig’s blood mixed with fat. And yes, I loved that too.

Oh man, what is WRONG with me?

I also loved bangers, the Scottish mild pork sausages… I’m seriously going to replace my normal breakfast sausage with these if I can find them in the states.

This trip was the first time I carried a moleskine notepad, taking notes of my travels#–I know everywhere I went, and I wrote down things people said or did so I could remember later. I also notated every photo I took so that I could create a much better journal, and title all the stills. I highly recommend keeping a pocket notepad with you on travels#–it just makes remembering the trip so much easier! Holland bought me a wallet pen to go along with it… the perfect companion!

Moleskine eh? Just like Hemingway!

I spent a whole month in Edinburgh for the festival, and didn’t eat Haggis once. Perhaps that’s because I already knew what was in it…

Oh, and I know exactly what you mean about getting film onto CD. It was the cost of processing and getting it scanned that finally forced me to make the switch to digital, even though it meant ditching my beloved Pentax SLR. As soon as I have enough money, I’m buying a digital SLR.

BROTHER! You’re back, though I already knew that because you called mom, and then I talked to you, well you know the rest of that story. I don’t think Christmas could come any sooner because I can’t wait to see you! It’s been forever and a day and that’s too long! Well, I love you and I’ll be talking to you soon! Thanks for the postcard!

BROTHER! Yay. I know we got off on the wrong foot the other night. Let’s just not talk about it. Well, I’m glad you are safe and had fun in Ye Olde Scotty Land! I love you and I miss you and I’ll tlak to you later! Much love!

Ah, the joys of the English language. There are differences within the British Isles just as there are differences between the sides of the Atlantic.

What Scots all a Turnip (neep) is what the English call a Swede - a larger member of the turnip family with yellow flesh.

Just so you get the right thing if you want to make it for yourself now that you’re back home.
