So I’m That Guy
I usually pride myself on being un-struck by celebrity#–I’ve worked with celebrities on projects, met them at functions and occassions, and I’ve never had a freak-out moment when I’ve met one. You know, the slack-jawed jabbering crazy-man with a too-tight handshake persona that most people take on when faced with a human being normally encountered only through the television or on the movie screen.
Well, today I was that guy.
The movie that really got me turned on to indy filmmaking is the movie Swingers, and once I learned about what it took to get the movie made, how it was made, and the lengths that the director went to get everything just right, I loved it even more. That movie’s director went on to create some of my favorite projects (Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) as a helmer, and additional amazing works as a producer. His name is Doug Liman, and today I ran into him on the Upper East Side.
I have to say that he was very kind to me, considering I interrupted his Sunday afternoon. When I saw him, I yelled out "Hey, aren’t you Doug Liman?" And before I really even knew what I was doing, I was walking to his car, shaking his hand, and thanking him for his influence on indy filmmaking. I don’t know how often people do this to him, but he handled the attention with aplomb and didn’t make me feel stupid for having put myself out there like that. All too often, people are disappointed by their idols#–there are countless tales of people treated poorly by a hero upon professing their adulation. And even though I was probably a bit of a psycho, he was nice enough to ask my name, and my website’s address when I mentioned that the Bourne Supremacy inadvertently sends me a lot of site traffic.
So, Doug Liman, thanks for being cool to me, and I meant what I said when I told you that you were my favorite filmmaker, and that I appreicate what you’ve done for encouraging indy filmmakers. And regardless of how crazy I may have seemed, I really am normal and have never behaved this way to a celebrity before in my life. I just had to shake your hand.

Nice that you got to meet someone who has influenced your life in such a positive way. I’m sure he doesn’t get recognized very often by the general public. Who knows what kind of day he might have been having #– you could have made his day!

I hope so… I would hate to just be the crazy foaming-mouthed guy on the street. :)

Oh, Nitch-olas. I love you; you crack me up. Just because I’m your little sister, I think it would have been hilarious to see you do that because it’s so out of the ordinary, lol. I have a HUGE favor to ask of you and I swear I’ll NEVER ask for ANYTHING ever again if you fulfill this wish of mine, lol. If you don’t, I’m just going to keep bugging you, lol. No, I’m just kidding. But it really is important. Call me and we’ll discuss, lol. Well, I love you and I miss you and I can’t wait until you come home for Christmas, and I’m liking school a lot more! Hope to hear from you soon! Much love and God Bless! XOXOXO
